Literature Review

Based on our research, we found that foreign labours had increase dramatically due to the manpower constraints in Malaysia. Industries which highly involved by foreign labours are manufacturing, construction, agricultural, plantation, services and domestic help sector. Meanwhile, the local labours are too picky on the job and require high salary, benefit and bonus. Thus, the increases of foreign labour are mainly affected by the quality of local workers; most of them are highly educated or with technical skills. Since the foreign labours had increase by approximately 5 million, government has established a range of policy related to in order to control the number of foreign labours. In other word, these policies still inconsistently apply and have yet to restrict their inflow.

Hypothesis

Since we have 2 Independent Variables in our research model,
therefore we have written 2 hypothesis for our research.

  • Government policies on foreign labour have an impact to the number of foreign labour depending on work permit conditions.
  • Job markets on foreign labour leads to the increase in number of foreign labour depending on the employment term, supply of local workers, and attractiveness of environment.

After we done the data in SPSS software, we will update whether the Hypothesis is accepted or rejected.
Stay tune~

Problem Statement

Problem Statement

Over the past 5 years (2008 – 2012), the number of foreign labour in Malaysia has increased dramatically from 1,935,975 (2008) to 7,018,300 (2012).
According to the data, most of the foreign labours in Malaysia are coming from Indonesia (50.9%), Bangladesh (17%), Myanmar (7.8%) and others. They are mainly involved in manufacturing, construction and plantation sectors which are considered as risky job.
Generally, foreign labour chooses to work in Malaysia due to the diversification of culture and better pay compare to their home country. Foreign labour can easily get a job with RM800 to RM900 pay in Malaysia while they only get around RM 400 to RM500 in their home country with unstable condition such as war, terrorist, natural disaster, etc.
Research Problem
1.      What are the possible reasons or factors for the increase in number of foreign labour?
2.      Who responsible for it?
   ü  Government
   ü  Foreign government
   ü  Workers
   ü  Employers
   ü  Minister
Research Questions
IV 1 à Do government policies lead to the increase of foreign labour in Malaysia?
IV 2 à do job market condition create the demand for foreign labour in Malaysia?
Research Objective
ü  To find out the work permit condition that influences the government policy on foreign labour that affects the increasing in number of foreign labour.
ü  To identify the attractiveness of environment that influences the job market that affects the increasing in number of foreign labour.
ü  To find out the supply of local workers that influences the job market that affect the increasing in number of foreign labour.
ü  To identify the employment term that influences the job market that affect the increasing in number of foreign labour.

Relationship Among Variables

Today, we grouped the variables accordingly.
Then, our group states all of our variables clearly by drawing a chart about Relationship Among Variables.

Next, we are on the stage of writing Problem Statement, Research Problem, Research Question and Research Objective.

Stage 4: Cause & Effect

After we done with the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, our group now proceed to another stage which is 100 reasons why will the problems exist! (Cause & Effect)

Our group think of 100 reasons, then we categorize it. At the end, we manage to sort out the highest score on the category of "Increasing in Number of Foreign Labor".

With the guidance of our lecturer, we learned something about the relationships among variable types in research.
Therefore, we proceed to another stage! Which is differentiate the cause & effect for the category of "Increasing in Number of Foreign Labor". Either it is the Independent Variable or Moderating Variable.

Stage 3: Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Now, our group already proceed to stage 3 of the process!

We will draw a triangle for Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs at first, then we categorize our highest score results in stage 1 & 2 on it.

In stage 1, our highest score for brainstorming of 100 problems was "Government". Thus, we categorize 12 of it on the left.

Then, we categorize the highest score on stage 2 which is "Environment" on the right hand side.

Unfortunately, our results was imbalance for the problems & solutions!
The highest category in problem's side was on "Physiological", but on the solutions side, highest was on the "Safety & Security".

Hence, we've to add in some of the solutions from stage 2 in order to balance it up.

Stage 2: Brainstorming Solutions

In the next tutorial class,
our group go for another brainstorming session.

101 solutions for the "Government Sector" which score the highest in our brainstorming previously.

Same thing, within an hour..
Then, we group it accordingly.
Here's our results!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Right after the tutorial class, we continued with the lecture class about problem-definition process.

At the end of the lecture class, our group had done this "Franchise Checklist - 4P's" base on McDonald.

Stage 1: Brainstorming 100 Problems

Our first tutorial class with Mr. Ong.
During this tutorial class, we formed our group with 6 members.
Which is: Yuki, Shirley, Christine, Lex, Xiu Fun and Ze Chin.

And, here we starts our tutorial class with brainstorming of 100 problems happens in our life!

Within an hour, here's our brainstorming result..

Then, under the guidance of Mr. Ong we grouped it by categories!

At the end, we get the top 3 results which is: 12 in government sector's problems followed by 11 in family problems and environmental problems.

- ITEX'13 -

First of all, the reason we created this blog is to record down everything things we learns in the course ABDM4064 Business Research.
Besides, we will also update the interesting process and results for our research done in this course.

During the first lecture class held on 8th May for our Business Research course, we met our professor Mr. Stephen Ong. It's an interesting and fun lecture class, Mr. Ong tells us a lot of his experiences in research industry.
By the recommendation of Mr. Ong, most of us attended the 24th International Invention, Innovation and Technology Exhibition (ITEX) on 10th May 2013 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
ITEX'13 was an amazing exhibition! We learned some of the techniques for investment on the talk given by Mr. Stephen Ong and other professional speakers; we played an investment game during the talk.. and most of us losing money! =)
Besides that, we got the chance to met some innovators from all around the world in the exhibition. Most of them introduced their new invention to us, and we are surprised by their brilliant ideas!

We've took some pictures during the exhibition..
